Sandia New Mexico Net Zero Plan

The Sandia New Mexico Net Zero Roadmap is a strategy developed by Sandia NM in collaboration with Jacobs and Brightworks to achieve net-zero emissions across all emission categories including onsite combustion, purchased energy, and value-chain emissions.

Sandia New Mexico Net-Zero Vision

We envision a resilient, net-zero emissions campus embracing innovation to meet the mission needs of tomorrow.

Plan to Achieve Net-Zero Emissions

The path to operational net zero by 2050 at Sandia New Mexico follows four main principles:

  1. Reduce Emissions from Buildings and Vehicles by implementing energy conservation measures for existing facilities, incorporating net-zero design standards for new facilities, electrifying the fleet, and reducing fugitive emissions
  2. Improve Systems Efficiency through implementing energy conservation measures, district energy exchange solutions, alternative energy sources, energy storage, and systems electrification
  3. Optimize Onsite Renewable Energy by deploying technologies, such as photovoltaic and/or concentrated solar power systems, to reduce dependency on grid energy and to further support energy resilience and energy security
  4. Explore Future Innovative Technologies, such as ground-source energy, energy storage, solar power, HVAC equipment, or other energy systems

Site Background

Sandia’s executive management offices and larger laboratory complex are located on Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Covering over 26 square miles and 6.9 million gross square feet of buildings, the site serves more than 13,000 employees. Scope 1 emissions account for almost half of the greenhouse gas emissions and another 40% are considered scope 2 emissions.
