Biography

Dr. Summer Ferreira is the Manager for the Renewable and Distributed Systems Integration (RDSI) department at Sandia National Laboratories. She has served in this role since 2019 as the program manager for Sandia activities in support of Department of Energy (DOE) program offices for Puerto Rico Energy Recovery, Energy Transitions Initiative, Solar Energy Technology Office Systems Integration, Office of Electricity Microgrids, and the Vehicle Technologies Office Grid Integration. Her department conducts research and development of technologies that enable grid modernization and resiliency, along with the large-scale deployment of renewable and distributed energy sources. Prior to beginning her position in RDSI, beginning in 2011, Summer led the Energy Storage Analysis Laboratory (ESAL) at Sandia in support of the DOE Office of Electricity program and led the safety thrust activities for the Department of Energy Storage System (ESS) program as well as outreach activities with stakeholders in ESS through the ESS Safety (ESS-S) Working Group. Summer received her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.
