Educational Outreach

Educating industry stakeholders on energy storage topics is an important activity for the energy sector. Energy storage can help meet emerging resilience and reliability needs; with the rapid pace of innovation in the energy storage industry, national laboratories help educate stakeholders on emerging technologies’ capabilities and limitations.

Sandia’s energy storage educational outreach team engages directly with stakeholders to obtain and share perspectives on best practices in energy storage deployment. We provide independent, objective technical analysis on best practices, lessons learned from specific state initiatives, and cross-state comparisons to support decisionmakers as they define deployment pathways for the emerging energy storage sector.

The team contributes to the Department of Energy Office of Electricity (DOE OE) Global Energy Storage Database, which provides research-grade information on grid-connected energy storage projects and relevant state and federal policies.

In addition, the educational outreach team conducts educational energy storage webinars for state decisionmakers across the country. These workshops, free for all attendees and funded by the DOE Office of Electricity, help state public utility commissions and related institutions around the United States develop the expertise they need to more quickly and efficiently integrate energy storage into their regional operations.

Our workshops, custom-designed in close collaboration with commission staff, have already engaged decisionmakers from over a dozen states with one- or two-day workshops on topics including energy storage technologies, performance, economics, valuation, interconnection, commissioning, safety, and emerging issues. Presenters are national experts from Sandia, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and other leading energy storage institutions from around the country.
