New software advancements provide cutting-edge energy storage analytics and planning

QuESt 2.0 is an evolved version of the original QuESt, an open-source Python software designed for energy storage (ES) analytics. The software provides centralized access to multiple tools and improved data analytics, aiming to simplify ES analysis and democratize access to these tools.

New improvements

Exciting advancements were recently made to the QuESt 2.0 tool, designed to empower stakeholders in the energy sector with cutting-edge analytics and planning capabilities. These new applications include:

  • QuESt Planning
The introduction of QuESt Planning brings a capacity expansion planning model that identifies cost-optimal investments in energy storage, resources, and transmission.
  • QuESt Progress
The ProGRESS (Probabilistic Grid Reliability Analysis with Energy Storage Systems) tool is now available in version 1.2.0, which includes major usability improvements, a Windows executable file for simpler installation, and enhanced results viewing. This Python-based open-source software assesses the resource adequacy of the evolving electric power grid integrated with energy storage systems (ESS), providing critical insights into grid reliability.

New advancements also include bug fixes and improvements to existing versions. QuESt now runs stable on newer Mac systems featuring the M archetype (M1 chip, M2 chip, etc.), ensuring a smooth experience for users. Additionally, the GLPK installation process on Macs has been optimized, making it easier to get started with the tools.

The QuESt development team is also working on a new application, ES4g Energy Storage for Generation, which will determine the optimal levels of energy storage needed to support planned generation mixes.

Installation and application assistance

In addition to new application advancements, the QuESt team also offers installation webinars. These webinars, intended to be a one-stop help desk for questions, occur every Tuesday at 9:30am MT. You can register for webinars here.
