Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller recently honored Sandia solar researcher Ken Armijo for his outstanding community service and volunteer impact in the local community. Armijo, along with several other volunteers and one volunteer organization, were recognized in late October during a ceremony for their diverse contributions and work to support those in need in the city of Albuquerque.

“My work in renewable energy, nuclear energy and aerospace research and development helps me to convey the exciting elements of STEM careers that can inspire students and parents to continue their education and obtain good jobs and fulfilling work and careers,” Armijo said. “My choice to invest in our community stems from my intrinsic commitment to create positive change no matter the challenges.”

Armijo’s investment in volunteerism is impressive. Over the last 20 years, he has mentored more than 30 students ranging in age from Pre-K to PhD; facilitated STEM outreach with more than 15 different New Mexico organizations; written and presented captivating tech talks; and together with his Sandia colleagues, hosted up to 900 students and family members annually for the popular Noche de Ciencias Family Science Night event.

“I fundamentally believe there is much potential in our community, and just a little inspiration can go a long way,” Armijo said. “I find that showing students and their families the exciting potential STEM can have, in both English and Spanish, can build profound social possibilities to help our diverse community.”

Sandians interested in volunteering may contact Sandia’s Community Involvement Office, and/or contact Albuquerque’s Office of Civic Engagement, which works with more than 30,000 active volunteers.
