Sandia National Laboratories is set to participate in the Los Alamos Nuclear Forum happening August 25, in person at the SALA Event Center in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and online. Hosted by the New Mexico Nuclear Alliance, the forum brings together government, national laboratories, industry, investors, utilities, Tribal leaders, universities, and policymakers to accelerate the next generation of nuclear innovation.
Sandia has over 45 years of experience informing policy decisions and leading in the development, integration, and implementation of technically safe, viable, and sustainable solutions to nuclear energy challenges, ranging from power generation to the management of spent nuclear fuel. Today, we leverage our state-of-the-art capabilities and facilities to support nuclear energy technology development and innovation throughout the nuclear fuel cycle.
Hector Mendoza, a mechanical engineer at Sandia, will moderate a panel on the grid–nuclear nexus featuring representatives from electric companies and utility authorities. The panel will examine the evolution of nuclear energy into a flexible, dispatchable, always-available resource capable of supporting a more reliable, affordable, and resilient electric grid. The conversation will also explore the technical, economic, operational, and regulatory innovations required to deploy these technologies at the speed today’s energy demands require.
Sandians will also be participating in several panels:
- Stephanie Booth, R&D manager of the Advanced Nuclear Fuel Cycle Technologies program, will join the panel “Deploying reliable power for the always-on economy.” The panel will discuss why energy demand is growing, where advanced nuclear fits, and deployment use cases, such as defense, industry, and water infrastructure.
- Gretchen Gano, R&D sociotechnical systems analyst, will participate in the lunch conversation “From research to deployment: Scaling nuclear innovation and the next workforce” about technology transfer, commercialization pathways, public-private partnerships, advanced manufacturing, and workforce development. She will also participate in the panel “New Mexico nuclear showcase – Innovating here. Deploying everywhere.”
- Greg Roselle, senior manager of the Integrated Nuclear Waste Management program, will share Sandia’s experience as the science adviser on long-term storage performance at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant as part of the panel “Waste management, cleanup and long-term stewardship In New Mexico.”
