Biography

Dr. Babu Chalamala is a Senior Scientist at Sandia National Laboratories. From 2015-2022, he was head of the Energy Storage Technology and Systems Department and Program Manager for Grid Energy Storage at the laboratory. Prior to joining Sandia in 2015, he was a Corporate Fellow at MEMC Electronic Materials, where he led R&D and product development in grid scale energy storage. Earlier, as a research staff member at Motorola and Texas Instruments, he made significant contributions to microelectronics and display technologies. He also had leadership roles in two startup companies commercializing large format lithium batteries and digital x-ray imaging systems. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), National Academy of Inventors, and the Academy of Sciences St Louis. He is also active member of the Electrochemical Society and the Materials Research Society. He served on the editorial boards of the Proceedings of the IEEE, IEEE Access, and Energy Storage Journal and as chair of the IEEE PES Energy Storage and Stationary Battery Committee. He is currently a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Power and Energy Society and Lead Editor of the Cambridge University Press Elements Series in Grid Energy Storage. He is receipt of the ESIG Technical Excellence Award in 2023, IEEE Morten Antler Lecture Award in 2018, and the James Eads Engineering Award from the Academy of Sciences St Louis in 2015. He has a B.Tech in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Sri Venkateswara University and his PhD degree in Physics from the University of North Texas. He authored over 120 papers and 13 patents and patent applications.
