Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Program

Materials & Components Compatibility

The materials and components compatibility program element applies Sandia’s core capability in hydrogen embrittlement to address fundamental questions about the mechanical behavior of materials when exposed to high-pressure gaseous hydrogen. The cornerstone of Sandia’s core capability in hydrogen embrittlement is the Hydrogen Effects on Materials Laboratory where specialized assets reside for conducting mechanical testing of materials with concurrent exposure to gaseous hydrogen at pressures from 1 MPa to greater than 100 MPa.

Hydrogen Behavior

The hydrogen behavior program explores the physics of hydrogen releases, including highly compressible flows, dispersion, accumulation, ignition, and flame radiation. The Turbulent Combustion Laboratory provides a platform for applying non-intrusive diagnostics to the study of high-pressure hydrogen jet releases, flame ignition and extinction, as well as releases from hydrogen liquid sources. The Sandia team develops and integrates models to describe these phenomena with the aim of providing a scientific basis for the development of hydrogen codes and risk assessment for hydrogen installations.

Quantitative Risk Assessment

Sandia’s Hydrogen Safety, Codes and Standards program includes a Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) program element that implements a structured process to support decisions about the safety of hydrogen systems and processes. The Sandia team is developing a framework and user interface to integrate hydrogen behavior into QRA to support industry in the deployment of codes, standards and infrastructure that enable safe, economical hydrogen technologies.

Hydrogen Infrastructure

Sandia has the R&D capabilities and partnerships that are required to remove technical barriers associated with the widespread deployment of hydrogen infrastructure. This unique capability does not exist elsewhere in the US and includes full-scale system and component testing and cycle-life research in excess of 700 bar hydrogen pressure.

Solar Thermochemical Hydrogen Production

Sandia maintains the equipment, experts, and partnerships required to develop technology for solar thermochemical (STCH) hydrogen production and thermal storage. Sandia’s experimental materials development and characterization capabilities are used to evaluate material behavior under extreme thermal conditions and heating rates.solar_thermo

Market Transformation

Sandia’s project demonstrations reduce industry risk by providing innovative solutions and hydrogen systems engineering. Sandia’s engineers develop and integrate hydrogen expertise both internally and with a range of industrial stakeholders to demonstrate new technologies in hydrogen. Examples include:

  • Hydrogen Fuel Cell Mobile Light Tower
  • Maritime fuel cell power system
