New report uses data to uncover similarities across Permian Basin counties November 4, 2024 8:08 am Published by Admin A new report by the Permian Energy Development Lab provides a framework for studying a large and diverse geographic area by aligning counties based on shared characteristics rather than just physical proximity. The report, “Community archetypes in the Permian Basin and their relationship to energy resources,” highlights the differences and similarities among these communities, focusing on their strengths and needs in relation to the energy industry, both past and future. Together, the 66 counties in the Permian Basin represent seven unique archetypes based on factors like population, education, employment, and oil and gas production. Sandia is a key technical advisor for PEDL, which aims to create opportunities for Permian Basin communities by advancing energy development. These community archetypes will enable PEDL to tailor its initiatives, outreach, and engagement to better fit community needs and interests. For example, the analysis identifies that workforce development focused on early educational and high school interventions might be most impactful for New Mexico counties like Chaves, Doña Ana, Otero, and Roosevelt where a high percentage of adults have no high school diploma. “This analysis highlighted the commonalities and differences between the counties of the Permian Basin, with some already having a strong energy presence while others had little to none,” said Thushara Gunda, a co-author of the report and Sandia’s technical lead for PEDL. “We plan to use these insights to inform engagements with the local communities to ensure their values are reflected and reinforced by our program activities that aim to foster innovation and workforce development.” Tags: Climate Security « Previous Next »
