Sandia to participate in panel on role of emerging technologies for Arctic energy justice

Renewable energy technologies’ program manager Abraham Ellis will represent Sandia as a panelist in an upcoming ArcticX virtual event on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, 12:00-2:00 p.m. MST.

The panel will focus on the role of emerging technologies to address energy justice in the Arctic. Ellis will discuss Sandia’s experience with energy initiatives in partnership with stakeholders in the Arctic and other locations like Puerto Rico. Co-hosted by the Department of Energy’s Office of Technology Transitions (OTT) and the Arctic Energy Office, the ArcticX series seeks to explore the Arctic’s largely untapped potential to serve as a living laboratory for clean energy innovation. The series is part of the OTT’s Innovation XLab initiative, which is designed to increase the commercial impact of the National Laboratory system.

Rapid changes in the Arctic, along with inadequate access to affordable and reliable electricity, present challenges for many Arctic communities. Sandia works closely with Alaskan communities and Native Villages to overcome these challenges by providing technologies and technical assistance that increase resilience and use of renewable energy. Additionally, harsh Arctic environments serve as a unique test bed for developing new energy technologies and that can be applied elsewhere. 

Sandia also works closely with local partners across the U.S. to ensure that our energy research and development efforts are beneficial to underserved communities. Ellis is currently helping lead efforts to further expand Sandia’s energy equity and environmental justice efforts.
