Co-Optima Capstone Webinar Series March 18, 2021 8:00 am Published by Mattie Hensley Upcoming Webinars highlight key takeaways from breakthrough initiative A webinar series from the Co-Optimization of Fuels & Engines (Co-Optima) initiative will highlight key takeaways from the multi-year project which explores how simultaneous innovations in fuels and engines can boost fuel economy and vehicle performance, all while reducing emissions. Sandia researchers Charles Mueller and Magnus Sjŏberg will join contributors from across the Department of Energy’s national laboratory complex to share topline findings, potential near- and long-term impacts, research methodology, challenges, and possible next steps in the R&D process. The series begins on March 25th, focusing on the question, “How can co-optimized fuels and spark-ignition (SI) engines enhance efficiency while reducing carbon emissions of light-duty (LD) passenger vehicles?” The following month, Mueller will join NREL’s Bob McCormick on April 29th to discuss how fuels and combustion can reduce pollutants from future diesel engines. Sjŏberg will focus on the question, “What unconventional engine-fuel combinations show the greatest promise for efficiency improvements beyond current LD/MD/HD technologies?” on August 26th. Mueller’s work with ducted fuel injection has received widespread attention for its potential to cost-effectively reduce emissions of soot and nitrogen oxides, encourage the use of renewable fuels, and maintain or improve engine performance. It is one of the technologies available for license from Sandia National Laboratories and was recognized with an R&D100 Award in 2019. Register to attend the upcoming webinars on the Co-Optima website. The webinars are free and scheduled for the last Thursday of each month at 2 p.m. ET.
