Sandia researchers to present during Waterpower Week

Sandia’s waterpower researchers will participate in the 2019 Waterpower Week to discuss the issues impacting the water power and materials industries. Waterpower Week includes three conferences: NHA’s Annual Conference, International Marine Renewable Energy Conference (IMREC), and Marine Energy Technology Symposium (METS). The event highlights perspectives on the challenges facing the hydropower and marine energy industries, legislative and regulatory initiatives, and the industries’ impact on the future of the energy portfolio. Sandia National Laboratories will host two workshops: Research Showcase: Relevance to Industry Commercialization scheduled for April 1, 2019, and Marine Energy Composite Research and Industry Needs scheduled for April 3, 2019.

Scheduled Workshops

Research Showcase: Relevance to Industry Commercialization

Monday, April 1, 2019
4:45 – 6:00pm
Marriott Marquis – Salon E
901 Massachusetts Ave NW

Description:

This panel will feature 10-minute “fastpitch” presentations about their research and how it “moves the needle” to help technology and project developers get MHK systems to commercialization. Speakers in this session will focus on specific topics such as: Advances in resource characterization, controls, device and environmental monitoring, testing data collection, and more! The presenters will discuss whether this is the right path to pursue and what should come next.

Marine Energy Composite Research and Industry Needs

Wednesday, April 3, 2019
3:00 – 5:00pm
Marriott Marquis – Liberty IJK
901 Massachusetts Ave NW

Description:

Giorgio Bacelli will present slides and answer questions as part of a Research Showcase panel session. The workshop will focus on recent composite materials research and the marine energy community’s need for further research. Presenters will share findings on composite materials properties and response for marine energy technology applications. The presentation will include an update on composite material samples that were tested for biofouling, fatigue, and corrosion under artificial and actual sea water conditions. Upcoming composite substructure evaluations will also be presented. The workshop will conclude by requesting attendee input on additional materials needs. This effort builds upon previous research supported by DOE to support marine energy technology design and manufacturing developments.
