As the Nation’s energy needs continue to expand and grow, access to the world’s natural gas supplies will play a critical role in its future prosperity.

Sandia’s Natural Gas Initiative integrates research from shale science, resource extraction, systems engineering, network modeling, fugitive emissions, combustion science, economics and complex systems to provide an in-depth, integrated view of the national natural gas system and its interdependencies with other systems and infrastructures. The initiative provides a framework for forming partnerships and collaboration to enhance national energy security and resilience.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

The United States Coast Guard (USCG), the Federal Energy Regulatory Committee (FERC), and the Department of Energy (DOE) have worked with Sandia to develop guidance on improving the risk management and hazard analysis for the marine import of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

Research efforts were designed to quantify the likelihood of cascading ship and cargo tank damage from an initial spill and fire and assess the impacts on public safety.
