Sandia’s Energy Storage Program will be at the 2017 MRS Fall Meeting and Exhibit in Boston, Massachusetts November 26 through December 1 to lead and participate in symposia and instruct two tutorials. See below for details:

Sunday, November 26

Tutorial ES04—Grid-Scale Energy Storage Materials and Systems | 1:30 PM – 5:00 PM | Hynes, Level 2, Room 207

This tutorial will be led by Babu Chalamala, Sandia, and Vincent Sprenkle, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and will include the following topics:

  • Energy Storage and Future Grid
  • Grid Energy Storage Materials and Manufacturing
  • Systems and Engineering Aspects Including Safety and Reliability
  • Integration of Energy Storage in the Grid

Tutorial ES05—Energy Storage System Materials and Design Safety Considerations—A Materials Perspective | 1:30 PM – 5:00 PM | Hynes, Level 2, Room 209

This tutorial will be led by Summer Ferreira and Heather Barkholtz, Sandia, and Partha Mukherjee, Purdue University, and will include the following topics:

  • Materials at the Cell to System Level for Safety Considerations
  • Modeling of Thermal Characteristics and Safety
  • Systems and Engineering Aspects Including Safety and Reliability
  • Research and Development Priorities for a More Resilient Energy Storage System

Symposium ES05: Materials and Design for Resilient Energy Storage | Hynes, Level 3, Room 309

Co-organized by Sandia, Underwriters Laboratories, National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, and Electric Power Research Institute, this symposium includes sessions on modeling, novel materials beyond lithium-ion, separators and electrolytes, anode and cathode materials, capacitors, commercial battery risk mitigation, and commercial cells analysis.
