Accurately describing and predicting complex underground phenomena might not be feasible by experimentation alone. Instead, it requires an integrated, multi-disciplinary understanding of the underlying processes involved, validated modeling and simulation, and robust numerical techniques. For example, imaging and mechanical testing can be combined with numerical simulation to illustrate the behavior of subsurface materials such as shale.

What We Do

Sandia’s subsurface-specific modeling and simulation capabilities enable us to address specialized subsurface challenges. Sandia’s underlying technical approaches include computational geomechanics, molecular dynamics modeling, coupled process modeling, abandonment and performance prediction, drilling dynamics modeling and simulation, large-scale optimization and uncertainty quantification, data and decision science, and numerical methods development. Subsurface problems include porous media flow, seismic imaging, hydraulic fracture imaging, and complex multiphysics.
