Sandia National Laboratories has a long history of vertical-axis wind turbine, or VAWT, research that is the foundation for today’s innovations. Wind researcher Todd Griffith recently discussed vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) with Windpower Engineering magazine, noting that there are still many advantages to VAWTs over the conventional three-blade designs, especially when considering offshore duty. The Sandia design studies for VAWT rotors include an assessment of different rotor architectures, numbers of blades, and different material choices.
