Sandia National Laboratories led a working group on behalf of the DOE SunShot Initiative to develop a guide for communicating the financial benefits of including PV on new homes. The “Solar Basics for Homebuilders: Reducing the Total Cost of Ownership” guide shows new homebuilders how to recover the cost of PV installation upon sale of the home by highlighting the role that appraisers and financiers play in the valuation process. The guide also showcases new developments in mortgage underwriting that will simplify the marketing and sale of new homes with PV. A total cost-of-ownership analysis for different metropolitan areas in the U.S. provides an example of how homebuilders can sell the benefits of PV considering different loan financing options. The working group included the following participants:

  • Sandra K. Adomatis, SRA, Adomatis Appraisal Service
  • CR Herro, VP Environmental Affairs, Meritage Homes
  • Jacob Hoppe, Business Development, Enphase Energy
  • Jamie Johnson, Managing Member, Energy Sense Finance LLC
  • Geoff Klise, Sandia National Laboratories
  • Kerry Langley, Sr. Loan Originator, NMLS 506632, PrimeLending, A PlainsCapital Company
  • Travis Lowder, National Renewable Energy Laboratory
  • Kurt Shillington, Director of Operations, Princeton Properties Management
