America’s energy infrastructure doesn’t stop at its borders. A significant portion of the nation’s liquid hydrocarbon fuels is imported from areas of the world subject to rapid social and political upheaval. This upheaval can jeopardize key facilities that process these fuels. This program area includes work addressing the protection of key fuel processing facilities and their supporting infrastructure by providing evaluation, physical protection training, and expert advice to the owners and operators of these international facilities.
As America’s infrastructures have become more complex and interconnected, their operation and control has become more complicated. Automated control systems, called SCADAs (supervisory control and data acquisition systems), networked across the internet have been widely deployed to operate these infrastructures. These systems, and the internet over which they handle information, are an identified security vulnerability for the infrastructures they control. The Energy Infrastructure Program Area works with several government agencies in the area of cybersecurity to ensure the integrity and availability of the nation’s cyber infrastructure.
The performance of the nation’s infrastructure is an essential component of the nation’s economic prosperity. Through its programs and projects, the Energy Infrastructure Program Area seeks to endow the infrastructure with five characteristics: security, reliability, safety, sustainability, and cost effectiveness.
