Cloud-based computing and data storage is currently being considered around the industry for information-sharing purposes. With the swift roll out of PMUs and the release of presidential directives aimed at increasing information sharing between independent system operators (ISOs) and utilities, the question has been how to securely share this information. Cloud computing offers a technological solution to sharing information amongst many utilities. However, collecting all this information in one place also makes that location a high priority target for attackers, making its cyber-security countermeasures extremely important. Additionally, protecting such data could prove to be difficult because the level of security will only be as good as the weakest participant.
