On February 17–18, 2014, Sandia National Laboratories and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory co-hosted the DOE OE Energy Storage Safety Workshop in Albuquerque, NM. This workshop’s goal was to address the need for validated energy-storage safety as identified in the DOE strategic plan for “Grid Energy Storage.”

Thought leaders in the fields of deployment, operation, regulation, first response, manufacturing, and research and development clearly identified the challenges and roadblocks to validating and advancing energy-storage safety. Each stakeholder group unanimously agreed that there must be an efficient and immediate action plan to ensure the validated safety of these systems. As a result, plans are underway to release a DOE OE Strategy for Energy Storage Safety in the summer of 2014.
