Solve the Nation’s Energy-Related Engineering Challenges in Subsurface Energy Production, Storage, and Waste Disposal

Sandia is a leader in subsurface science for the DOE, integrating investments from multiple federal programs and commercial industry partners focused on the both petroleum (oil and gas) and derivative benefits for geothermal energy and subsurface energy storage and waste disposal. We work in shale science, salt sciences, drilling technologies for difficult subsurface environments, and scaling geological information from nano- to macro-scale systems.

Focus Areas:

  • Science and technology basis for fracturing and fluid flow control leading to reduced environmental impact from subsurface energy production
  • Science and technology to ensure safe transportation and long-term subsurface storage of energy, and energy-related wastes and by-products
  • science for understanding “tight rocks” leading to increased efficiency of subsurface energy production
