Sandia will be sponsoring the 2013 MIT Energy Summit exploring the theme, "From Idea to Impact: Collaborating to Meet Global Energy Challenges", March 1-2, 2013 in Boston, MA.
The MIT Energy Conference supports our Energy Security mission to accelerate the development of transformative energy solutions that will enhance the nation’s security and economic prosperity. The conference brings together university, industry and government communities to exchange technological and non-technological ideas for a more secure energy future for the nation. Sandia will be participating throughout the conference and helping to shape the energy conversion at the most influential technical institution in the world. A key component of the conference is broader engagement with the MIT community. By establishing contacts with MIT energy researchers, SNL will have the opportunity to promote future research collaboration with MIT in both technical and policy areas. Please look for us at Friday Night Energy Showcase and follow the discussion @MITEnergyConf.

The Energy Storage Technology Advancement Partnership project of the Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA) and the Department of Energy is presenting a webinar featuring a case study conducted by Sandia National Laboratory on the Island of Maui and its goals of increasing its renewable energy capacity and the role of energy storage.
The Hawaiian Island of Maui plans to provide upwards of 40% of its system capacity by renewable energy resources by 2015. Maui Electric Company (MECO) plans for three large wind farms and a significant distributed deployment of photovoltaics. This work investigates strategies utilizing energy storage resources in reducing anticipated wind curtailment and mitigating any increases in production costs.
The integration of different energy storage resources into an hourly production cost model of the MECO power system allows for a load balance and economic analysis to value the efficacy of energy storage deployment. This work highlights the immediate value for deploying energy storage on island systems.
