Technical Papers Presented at Spring Meeting of Solution Mining Institute, Grand Junction, CO

Chris Rautman (6732), Scott Broome (6735), and Tom Pfeifle (6735) attended the Spring Meeting of the Solution Mining Research Institute (SMRI) held in Grand Junction, CO, on April 25–28, 2010.  Chris co-authored and presented the paper, A Three-Dimensional Geometric Model of the Bayou Choctaw Dome, Southern Louisiana, Using 3-D Seismic Data.Chris was also a co-author, with Kurt Looff (Geostock US) and Karl Looff (Consultant), of a second presented paper.  Scott co-authored (with Steve Bauer, 6735) and presented the paper, “Experimental Deformation of Salt in Cyclic Loading.SMRI is a nonprofit, worldwide organization with more than 150 member organizations in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America. It sponsors and funds research, holds workshops and semi-annual meetings, and participates in the development of government regulations all focused on solution mining of evaporites for cavern storage (oil, gas, compressed air energy storage [CAES], etc.) and mineral (potash, salt, soda ash).  Sandia, through its Geotechnology & Engineering Department (6732), is a member of SMRI.

 

Bauer Attends World Geothermal Congress, April 25-30, 2010, Bali, Indonesia

Steve Bauer (6735) attended the World Geothermal Congress and Exhibition held in Bali, Indonesia, on April 25–30, 2010.  The meeting and related workshops, held every 5 years, attracted more than 2,000 registrants and provided a global forum for scientific and technical information about resource utilization, technology innovation, production sustainability, environmental benefits, risk mitigation, and market development.  In the week before the congress, Steve chaired a meeting of the International Energy Agency (IEA) GIA Annex VII, Advanced Geothermal Drilling and Logging Technology Committee under the International Geothermal Implementing Agreement (GIA) comprising representatives from five countries as well as the European Commission.  The primary accomplishment of the committee was the drafting of the Handbook of Best Practices for Geothermal Drilling.

Sandia National Laboratories is playing significant technical and advisory roles in the evaluation and clean up of the Deep Water Horizon accident in the Gulf of Mexico.  Tasked by Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu, to look at ways to plug the leak in the Gulf, Sandia scientists and executive management convened in Houston.  For more information on Sandia’s involvement in the Deepwater Horizon Response click here.

Sandia National Laboratories is honored to be the recipient of an arpa-e award in the Innovative Materials & Processes for Advanced Carbon Capture Technologies (IMPACCT) category.  The proposed research is the result of a joint collaboration with Columbia University and Reaction Engineering International (REI). Vice-President Joe Biden announced the recipients of over $106 million in funding for 37 research projects at a Recovery Act Cabinet Meeting on April 29, 2010.  Pat Brady, a Sandia researcher and distinguished scientist in the Geoscience Research and Application group, will lead the Sandia team for this collaborative effort.  For a full list of the award recipients click here.
